Map & Directions for Central Hotel

Directions to Central Hotel

Cheltenham is well serviced by public transport, with the Cheltenham Spa train station providing direct services to London Paddington, Bristol Temple Meads and the West Country, and to Birmingham and the north. National Express coach services travel to Cheltenham from all over the country, and Stagecoach provides a local service around the Cotswolds and Gloucestershire. By car: Cheltenham is easily reached from the M4 and M5 motorways, and is crossed by both the A46 and the A40. From the M4: Leave the motorway at junction 15 (signposted Swindon), and follow the A417/A419 to Cheltenham. At the Air Balloon Inn roundabout just outside Cheltenham, take the second exit down the hill and follow the road all the way into the town centre. After about four miles, follow the road down and left onto Oriel Road and the one-way system (two turns after the Eagle Star tower). Follow the inner ring signs over the Promenade and right past the bus station. At the traffic lights, follow the one-way system right and past Pizza Hut and Boots. Just after the road bends to the right turn left onto Portland Street and you will see Central Hotel almost immediately on your right. From the M5 (north): Leave at junction 10 and follow the A4019 for about three miles into the town centre, following the one-way system along the high street, onto Clarence Street and past Pizza Hut and Boots. Just after the road bends to the right turn left onto Portland Street and you will see Central Hotel almost immediately on your right. From the M5 (south): leave at junction 11a and follow the A417 to the junction with the A46 (signposted Cheltenham). Follow the A46 for about two miles until you reach a roundabout, and turn left for Cheltenham. After the Eagle Star tower, follow the road down and to the second left onto Oriel Road and the one-way system. Follow the inner ring signs over the Promenade and right past the bus station. At the traffic lights, follow the one-way system right and past Pizza Hut and Boots. Just after the road bends to the right turn left onto Portland Street and you will see Central Hotel almost immediately on your right. By train: The station is a twenty minute walk or a short bus or taxi ride from Central Hotel and the town centre. Take buses F or G to the town centre (see below for walking directions from the high street), or get a taxi outside the main entrance. If you are walking, leave by the main entrance and turn right as you leave the car park onto Queens Road. At the junction with Lansdown Road and the Texaco petrol station, take a very slight left and follow Lansdown Road for about 600 yards until you reach a large roundabout. Turn left down Montpellier Walk, which leads into the Promenade. Walk down the Promenade past the shops and over the pedestrianised section at Cavendish House, and follow the High Street around to your right. Take the first left after Boots and cross the road to reach Portland Street, with Central Hotel on your right. If you get the bus from the train station, get off F or G on the High Street just after Tesco Metro. Follow the High Street down and turn left after Littlewoods and onto North Street. Follow the road to the right and take the next left onto Portland Street - Central Hotel is immediately on your right. By bus: National bus services will arrive at the Royal Wells bus station, about five minutes walk from the hotel. Turn left out of the bus station, and then right at the traffic lights onto Clarence Street. Follow the road past Boots and around to the right, and then take the next left onto Portland Street, with Central Hotel immediately on your right. By air: Cheltenham`s nearest airport is Bristol International Airport .

The only drawback was the lighting in the bathroom, a bit dim so akward to put make up on!

The directions were not useful for someone driving from the North via the M5 as I was.
The staff were most welcoming and helpful but only on daytime duty.
The room was awkwardly laid out with the bed flush with the door. This was directly onto the entrance lobby and I was frequently woken through the night by fellow guests. Even those trying to enter reasonably quietly.
There was no ensuite toilet and the nearest toilet was through the hotels front entrance hall into the rear entrance hall both of which were lit and easily viewed from outside let alone by fellow guests. Not so relevant from the rear as that accessed the hotels own car-park but the front door was direct onto the street and any passing pedestrian could view nocturnal peregrinations!!!
Cleanliness was adequate but the bed was not remade during my stay. [4-days]
The TV was close to 7 foot off the ground and could not be viewed for extended periods without a pain in the neck or standing. I had to put my own batteries in the remote as the staff were off duty by the time I found it didn't work on the first night.
Local information was scanty and there was no local map in the room or pinned on the lobby wall which made the list of those "useful" addresses that were there of little real use.
Overall I was disatisfied considering the £30 a night (£45 for Sat) price that I paid for a small single room only that was empty at 1 days notice.
