Heddon's Gate Hotel

Martinhoe Parracombe, Exmoor

On the steep slopes of the magnificently wooded Heddon Valley, hidden in a spectacular setting at the end of a quarter-mile private drive, you will discover Heddon’s Gate. This is a true country house hotel, run by its owners, Anne and Eddie Eyles. It is secluded and tranquil, and is set in more than 2½ acres of its own gardens and woodland. Built as a hunting lodge in the 1890s, when the Victorian wealthy were choosing all the best sites for their country estates, the hotel is now a charming fusion of different styles. Heddon’s Gate is an AA two-star Country House Hotel, with a 78% merit score. We are proud to be featured in the independent and respected Good Hotel Guide.
Here our guests appreciate the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, enjoy good company and relish fine food and wine. We welcome well-behaved dogs (subject to conditions and charges); we normally decline to take children. The hotel has ten distinctive bedrooms, each equipped with TV, radio, hair dryer, direct-dial telephone and hot drink facilities. All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms with WC, basin and bath and/or shower. The public lounges are welcoming, spacious and comfortable. The proper bar is well-stocked and the wine list carefully chosen.
Eating at Heddon’s Gate is always an occasion. Start the day with a hearty English breakfast, or a lighter option if preferred. Do consider upgrading some of all of your stay to half-board, which includes afternoon tea and our excellent 4-course dinner plus coffee. The limited-choice menu changes completely every day, and everything is freshly cooked on the day. Therefore we do require notice if you wish to take dinner – ideally at least 48 hours. The price for half board is £31·50 per person per night.
The natural beauty of Exmoor makes it a walker’s paradise. Explore dramatic coastal scenery, spectacular moorland, wooded combes and varied wildlife. Many favourite walks start directly from the hotel. Much of the unspoilt countryside is equally accessible by car. You can also explore the stately old houses, gardens, castles, museums, fine churches, markets and craft centres that abound in North Devon and Exmoor.
Experience the best of Exmoor hospitality at Heddon’s Gate.

It was beautifully remote and peaceful which made it worth the journey down narrow lanes.
The dinner (high tea and four course meal) package was very expensive for us so we chose to eat a local good pub. However a cheaper option for a smaller supper would have been much appreciated as we would have liked to enjoy the atmosphere further. This was a one night en-route stay for us, so it may be more suited to three or more nights stays.
Overall we're really glad we found it, thanks LateRooms.

The reason I have rated some of the categories so low is that the owner could not offer us an evening meal, having said we were too late, (we arrived at 3.45pm), and only having breakfast which wasn't brilliant (in my opinion) was not a true reflection perhaps of what other people experienced who were possibly on half board. Also when we checked out the owner was very involved in doing breakfast and didn't really appreciate us checking out before he'd finished, which is not very good customer service for a hotel that is quite expensive! That said, the location is stunning and the room was lovely (but pricey). A real shame cos it had the potential to have been a wonderful food experience, but unfortunately we didn't get the chance!

The hotel was very difficult to find. I like peice and quiet but this hotel lacked any atmosphere. While the setting and the building were lovely, internally the hotel was in a bad state of repair.

We only stayed for 2 nights but wished it could have been longer. It was very peaceful and the views were amazing. We shall definitely be returning very soon. We did not think this hotel to be suitable for young children but would recommend it highly for a tranquil, relaxing break.
