The Royalist Hotel

Digbeth Street,Stow On The Wold, Stow on the Wold

Part of the building in medieval times was also known as The Eagle and Child Inn. The unusual name derives from Sir John Stanley in the 14th century. Legend recalls the adoption of a child in an eagle's nest. The last battle of the first English Civil War in 1646 took place at Stow-on-the-Wold, and reputedly Digbeth Street is so named as the place literally ran with blood from The Royalist casualties. The ducks were bathing from the blood, hence the 'Duck Bath'. There have been many historic discoveries at The Royalist, including a 10th century Saxon shoe, two crucifixes, a Royalist commander's letter, and a tunnel that leads from the bar to the church across the street - there is also evidence of a bear pit. Still visible in the rooms are the witches' marks, an ancient frieze and the thousand-year-old timbers. Evidence suggests that The Royalist began as part of a Saxon community as long ago as 514AD. In 949AD, Saxon Duke Aethelmar founded The Royalist as a hospice that was to shelter lepers - one can still find a leper hole in the oldest part of the cellar!! During the 16th century the building was known as Porch House, and this was the home of the Shellard family.

The hotel is quaint but somewhat shabby in parts. We were "upgraded" to the four poster room which normally costs £160 per night. I definitely would NOT pay that amount. The room was clean but the bed was uncorfotable and small, there was flaking paintwork, no shower, no satellite tv, no safe, no mini-bar/fridge, no iron/trouser press. However, the towels in the bathroom were excellent. The breakfast was good but the service unsatsifactory.

There were very few people in the hotel. Indeed, on the second night we were the only residents. In the circumstances it is unfortunate that we were given the smallest room in the hotel, without chairs to sit on! If we had been given an average room it would have cost the hotel no extra and we would have been much more likely to recommend it to a friend. The food was excellent.

The Eagle and Child pub attached to this hotel is over 1000 years old, which of course makes it a very interesting place to stay. The interior is modern and the hotel bedroom was not large but adequate but with attractive decor. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Stow on the wold is a lovely Cotswold village, very English with a lovely relaxed atmosphere.
