163 West Nile Street, Glasgow

Located in Glasgow’s fashionable Theatreland district, the award winning Holiday Inn Glasgow City Centre Theatreland offers 113 superbly appointed, air conditioned rooms as well as spacious Executive Rooms, sumptuous Penthouse Suites and Wi-Fi access throughout.
To say we are a favourite among guests who choose hotels in Glasgow for short breaks, shopping trips, theatre breaks or business meetings is certainly true. However, we like to think winning Intercontinental Hotels Group’s Torchbearer Award for three years running, proves our point and puts us ahead of other hotels in Glasgow . Thanks to the hotel’s superb location in Glasgow’s city centre, you are just steps away from the King’s & Pavilion Theatres, the Royal Concert Hall, the best shopping outside London, as well as many restaurants and bars, including our own AA Rosette winning La Bonne Auberge Brasserie.
Other attractions include the famous Kelvingrove Art Gallery, the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow Science Centre plus the SECC and Clyde Auditorium. The picturesque sights of Loch Lomond are within easy reach too.

The hotel was well presented, with an attractive entrance hall and bar area especially. The reception staff were polite and efficient. I was very happy with the prtesentation of my room, which was clean and attractive, and had been well laid out before my arrival.
There were a number of problems, however.
Only one of the 2 lifts to the rooms was working. The lifts were slow anyway, and with only one working, progress up to the rooms was slow and frustrating.
The service at the bar was very slow. There seemed to be only 2 staff members working there, and at times, both were serving tables, and absent from the bar area itself completely. I waited quite a while to be served on more than one occasion - particularly frustrating when we were trying to have a business meeting in the bar.
I was given times for breakfast, saying it was served up until 10am. This was fine - I arrived fairly late, at about 9.45am, and of course was able to sit and have breakfast with no problem. But I was surprised to see the staff start to clear the area at 10am precisely - I was still eating my breakfast, and trying to enjoy a relaxing start to a long day, and around me, staff were wheeling through cabinets, clearing tables and moving around furniture. I wouldn't have thought it was too much to expect that i could enjoy a quiet and peaceful breakfast, having arrived on time. If the staff need to clear the entire breakfast area at 10am, I'd have thought it reasonable to tell the guests that breakfast is served until 9.30am, thus allowing guests time to enjoy their breakfast before this interruption started. If breakfast is to be served until 10am, the I'd have thought it reasonable to leave clearing everything up until 10.30am. I felt it rather rude to be clearing up around me while I was eating, and I felt rushed and unrelaxed.
In addition, the hot food served at breakfast was rather unappealing. The suasages, black pudding, beans, bacon, and eggs all looked as though they had been sitting there for some time, and were not attractive at all. Thankfully, the fruit was rather fresher looking, and tasting.
Fianlly, my room had been extended to a 1.30pm check-out time, at my request. This was good, and gave me some much needed breathing space in the morning. However, at 1.28pm, I left the room to go next door to my colleague's room, to check he was ready for the meeting we were about to go to. Returning to my room at 1.32pm, I found that my card had ceased working! - it expired right on 1.30pm dead, and I was unable to get back into the room. I had to walk down the stairs, 4 floors, to reception (as my card no longer operated the lift either), in order to get the card re-activated to go back into my room to get my bag. This was ridiculous, and incredibly heavy-handed. Surely there is no need, in a hotel catering for business guests, as I was, to have such a heavy-handed system of "shut-out" like that, the second your allocated time is up. I felt quite angry about that, and would need assurances that such a heavy-handed approach would not be in place again, before I would consider using the hotel again.

For location, this hotel is excellent and for that reason would stay again. It is right in the heart of the city with everything within walking distance. However, I am sure the rooms could be noisy but we asked for a quite one based on previous reviews and we were ok.
The room was quite small and perhaps a little tired but served the purpose as we never intended to spend a lot of time in it, so can't complain.
We hadn't intended to have breakfast as there are many eateries in Glasgow. On the Sunday though, we had to as we wanted to leave fairly early. This wasn't a brilliant breakfast, buffet style hot and cold. Perhaps a bit steep at £13.75.

Used this hotel as it was a short walk from the bus station and almost in the centre of Glasgow.
The staff at reception were very helpful. Though - not being used to hotels with pass cards, we could have done with a bit more explanation about using the card in the light switch facility when we got to our room. Also, a better explanation about the control for the air conditoner/heater would have been helpful.
We used the hotel as we were going to a performance at the SECC and the reception staff kindly ordered us a taxi which came on time but if anyone else is doing that, its handy to note that a bus runs from the side of the hotel to the venues on the Clyde.
The view from our room was not of the best but then ... what more could one expect at such a price! Everything very clean and comfortable and the staff polite, courteous and helpful.
As breakfast was not included in the price, it might have been more convenient that a reduced, cheaper breakfast - say tea, toast, bacon roll etc could have been served in the bar area. However, having said that, we paid the full price and enjoyed an excellent breakfast - the bacon was the best cooked and tasty we've come across for some time. Would go there again if we need another overnight stay in Glasgow
