Dressed with bespoke soft furnishings, luxury 1200 pocket mattresses, Philips 20 inch flat screen TV’s, aromatherapy toiletries, hairdryers, iron boards (available at reception), tea, coffee and ho chocolate making facilities. The hotels main priority is for guests to feel relaxed and comfortable in a fresh and clean environment. There are four rooms located on the ground floor and du to our detached location in Windermere most of the rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor have excellent views over trees and roof tops to the surrounding countryside. Because the hotel understand that guests are here to relax they don’t expect residents back when they close he front door, the room key allows guests to come and go as they please, the hotel just asks that other guests relaxation is respected by keeping noise to a minimum.
The Hotel offers a Cumbrian Breakfast which can be enjoyed in the bright, spacious and tastefully decorated Dining rooms. In one of the room's is a Grandfather clock which seems to add a little charm every quarter hour when it chimes. As the lodge is located only 2mins from the centre of the town, it has selected to only cater for breakfasts allowing the guests freedom to dine in the many restaurants and bars in the town.
On the first floor there is an open lounge area furnished with Chesterfield sofa’s Brinton carpet and original stained glass windows offering panoramic views across Windermere to the fells beyond, a relaxing area to sit with a book or newspaper and pass the time away, or to catch up on the day’s events. From the lounge guests descend the original pitch pine wooden staircase to reception with again luxury Briton carpet, handmade wooden features, grandfather clock and William Morris wallpaper. From reception guests then enter either of the two breakfast rooms; these bright spacious rooms are where staff will serve tea of coffee and take the breakfast order and a freshly prepared Cumbrian breakfast whilst guests help themselves to the breakfast buffet selection.
The Lodge is centrally located in the town of Windermere, originally called Birthwaite until the Kendel and Windermere Rail company built a train station in the village and called it Windermere Station, a name which has been associated with the town and lake since. The train station itself is a site to see as are the cottages built in 1849 for the rail executives and designed by the Famous architect Augustus Pugin. One of the cottages even contains a replica of the fireplace he designed in the Palace of Westminster. Then there is Blackwell house, a fantastic example of the Arts and Crafts period which has recently been restored to its former glory. The Lake is also home to Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Center which houses several interactive features detailing the story of how the National park came to be. Then there is the World of Beatrix Potter attraction, a must for anyone whether with family or having a romantic break. The Lake itself has long been a place for watersports enthusiasts to visit, despite the local council imposing a speed restriction on the lake. Many Water speed world records have been set on the lake in the 1930s and 1950s. Nearby is the town of Ambleside on the northern edge of the Lake. The Town is the base for all Cycling, Climbing and Mountaineering activities in the area and also home to St Martin's College, soon to be the University of Cumbria.
Also close by is the Village of Bowness-on-Windermere, a town that has grown alongside Windermere since the building of the Station. The Windermere Steamboats Museum is located in Bowness and houses an exhibition by Arthur Ransome, Authur of several books including Swallows and Amazons in which he based the Town of 'Rio' on Bowness-on-Windermere.

We really enjoyed our stay at Ellerthwaite Lodge. The breakfasts were fantastic, service very efficient and friendly. The rooms were clean and in a lovely condition. The whole atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. The location of the hotel was ideal for walking into Bowness and Windermere, there was ample parking in their car park. I would highly recommend this hotel.
