Brackenrigg Inn

Watermillock, Penrith

Welcome to the Brackenrigg - an 18th century coaching inn overlooking Ullswater in the heart of the beautiful English Lake District. Our guests enjoy stunning views of the lake and the surrounding fells from our dining room, bar, lounge, terrace, garden and from most of our comfortable, en-suite bedrooms. The general quality of the facilities is, of course, what you should expect from an AA 3-Star Inn. We offer a very flexible range of rooms, from affordable standard rooms to superior rooms to ground floor suites - one of which has full disabled facilities. Each suite can also be combined with a superior room upstairs to form a spacious apartment, ideal for families and small groups. All of our bedrooms are en-suite, some with shower only and others with bath and shower. We have excellent wheelchair access to our public areas: bar, lounge and dining room. Three of our rooms are dog-friendly and, of course, we also welcome guide dogs. A number of our rooms are ideal for families, too. We can offer activity options, a secure cycle shed and a wealth of local knowledge to guests as well as very flexible conference facilities to small business groups. Our excellent, well-chosen range of wines and local beers complement the menus perfectly and our bar, with its local character and open fire is there for you to relax in even more.

Value for money takes on a whole new meaning when you stay at this hotel - my visit was in November, so the rate will be lower than peak-season. That said I've stayed in far worse hotels and paid much more for them! The Brackenrigg Inn has to have one of the best views, overlooking Ullswater and surrounding hills, beautiful.
The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly - we checked breakfast time at the bar and were told 08.15 - 09.30. This was a little late for us as we had a meeting at 09.00 a fair distance away - no sooner was this mentioned than we were told that the staff had been asked to be in early and get breakfast ready for 07.30 - now that is service!
A thoroughly pleasant stay with excellent food and local beers, wish I could have stayed longer to enjoy the view more!

The hotel commands a fine position looking down on Ullswater .The Stables Suite that I occupied was very nicely furbished but the lighting in the lounge area could be improved as it was either dark or extremely bright .
The evening bar menu was adequate however there is a Specials menu but due to the lack of conversation demonstrated by our waitress we were not made aware of its existance .
I must however give credit to the Excellent Cheese Board - the best I have had anywhere !!
The bathroom was well equipped and well presented .
The bedroom was equipped with a colour TV in the bedroom , however the auto switch on facility was programmed for the TV to switch on automatically at 07.30 am (unbeknown to me ) causing me to awaken earlier than anticipated !
My bath following this , had limited hot water as this ran out without warning .
Our breakfast was further delayed as we had a 35 min wait after placing our order for it to arrive and despite several members of staff floating around the dining room no apology was made until after 30 mins I made my feelings known .
On leaving the hotel I completed the feedback form and commented on the above issues and also made the reception person aware of the issues we experienced so this report should not come as a surprise .

Stayed for two nights with a 3yr old and 6mth old. Booked superior family room in the Inn, so we could enjoy a nice meal in the evening. Ended up with a suite in the old stables - the distance preventing our baby monitor from working properly, spoilt an otherwise superb meal. Although the extra space was nice, the carpets in the suite were quite dirty, maybe due to them allowing dogs and not suitable for a little one to crawl around on.
