It was like Fawlty Towers without the fun element. Firstly, tho I have to say I do not know if this is an error with Laterooms or with the Royal Oak not telling Laterooms, but when booking I requested a smoking room only to be told on arrival that all rooms were non-smoking. This was not mentioned on the Royal Oak's own website either. The room itself was reminiscent of an old fashioned gentleman down on his luck - fraying at the edges and somewhat sorry for itself. There was a misnamed power shower in the bathroom - I used it and had to keep checking the water was still flowing! There was a television in the room which had dreadful reception and when you got a good picture it would be distorted if anyone in the building moved. There is some sort of generator or machinery attached to the side of the building which was switched on early in the morning making an horrendous noise - so much for a leisurely lie in! We had a meal there the first evening and all I can say is the promise was never delivered. Its advertised as award winning which made me wonder how many entrants there could have been for that award. Kick out time is 10:00 so on Sunday morning we decided to have a breakfast to set us up for the day. My partner had overcooked rubbery kippers and I had what looked like a decent if small for the cost full English - which I couldn't eat because it came out of the kitchen ready smothered in salt and pepper. I prefer to do my own seasoning as I dont like pepper. All in all I think the word that sums this place up is 'complacent'. It was probably very good in the past but my experience would suggest they are living in the past instead of working to maintain or raise high standards. The general look of the place makes it seem more like it was built on the 13th of last month rather than the 13th century. Disappointing. |

Hotel was ideally situated for the Eden Project and general touring. Room was clean and comfortable with a good quality ensuite. Friendly staff and good quality food at reasonable prices. Will stay again. |
