Passage House Hotel

Hackney Lane,Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot (Exeter)

Built next to a 17th century Inn on the banks of the Teign estuary, the hotel offers a (modern) comfortable atmosphere whether your stay is for business or pleasure. There has been a hostelry on the site since Roman times. It was the site of a tidal ford and travellers would arrive and wait to cross the river. The hostelry became known as the ‘passage way’ across the river now the Passage House. In later years a granite railway was built to link the quarries on Dartmoor with the Stover Canal shipping granite which was used on many of London’s famous buildings. Also china clay was mined locally and shipped out via the Hackney Canal. The river was a hive of activity with the Lightermen and Barge’s working the estuary and canals. The ruins of their cottages are still to be seen on the banks of the river along from the Inn. We are perfectly situated as a base to explore the delights of Devon, from the towering red sandstone cliffs and sheltered sandy coves with beautiful bays along the coastline to the contrast of the wild and rugged terrain of Dartmoor. The hotel offers a very attractive and relaxing leisure suite with a Steam Room, Sauna and well appointed Gym. Our Beauty Salon offers a range of treatments, massage and aromatherapy. For coffee and that informal meet, the Vue terrace and conservatory offers stunning views of the estuary. Our Lightermans Restaurant offers ‘table d’hote’ and ‘a la carte’ menus, making the best use of local produce. For a more informal dining experience (or as an alternative) you can dine at the Inn which offers an excellent Carvery and an extensive menu from a sandwich to succulent steaks and fish.

We have stayed at this hotel before and both times we were in the lodge. We have also stayed in the hotel proper. The hotel is more expensive (but you get breakfast) a little bit shabby and quite noisy (when we were there). In contrast the lodge is modern, clean comfortable and quiet and quite a bit cheaper. The lodge is ideal for people who like to be a bit more independant as there is no reception or room service although the staff are very helpful if you need them. All in all a good value good quality hotel.

Generally good value for money except breakfast in the hotel. I felt it was a little excessive to be charged £10 for literally just a cup of tea and a packet of breakfast cereal with some milk.

Location is excellent in terms of proximity to motorway. Food was average although there was lots (too much and slightly overcooked). Booked it on the basis that I could get on to braodband but could not even after asking the staff. Not so good for the business user. Workmen started working on the new rooms at 07.45 which was slightly earlier than anticpited/expected. Disapointed overall.
