Lovely hotel, friendly staff, good food. Only 10 minutes walk to the centre of York. We will definitely be going back.

Overall, my wife and I were both very impressed with the hotel, the quality of the food, the room, the general ambience. However, this was slightly marred by the rudeness of the breakfast waiter who, when approached by my wife requesting more crossaints, as they had been consumed by other guests, claimed there were none. Not the answer one might expect. When asked if more could be provided the waiter made a point of informing my wife that the chef would be forced to cook them especially for her leaving her with the distinct impression that her request was something of an inconvenience.
In addition, I could not help but overhear this same waiter taking issue with another guest who, on politely informing him that he had mistakenly brought one instead of two cooked breakfast, was than told by him in no uncertain terms that she had only ordered one. Whilst this may well have been the case, as a professional with the reputation of the hotel to uphold, in both cases he should, I would suggest, have followed the maxim that the customer is always right, even if sometimes they clearly are not. Given the claims made by the hotel's management that the Marmaduke and its staff are here to provide a first class service and are willing to go to any lengths to make the stay an exceptional one, then what happened in the dinning room clearly fell short of this. Whilst seemingly trivial, such poor service can leave a lasting impression and spoil what potentially should have been, and almost was, a great experience.
Despite this, would I stay again? Well probably, but not without first considering alternative hotels.

Lovely hotel - they have some great little touches that make it feel special and small and the quality of the room, staff and food was second to none - very enjoyable stay and would highly recommend.

Hotel was lovely but could not stop there as they had no reservation for us and they were fully booked. They did find us an alterative hotel and drove us there, provided us with a drink and made sure we were looked after. we would stop there if we went to york again but we would book direct and not through this site as a booking was not made by this site. lucky for us the hotel staff were efficient and could find us other accomadation otherwise our night away would have been ruined.
