Gateway To York Hotel

Kexby, York

This privately owned and operated award-winning hotel, restaurant and conference venue could hardly be better placed or equipped for both business and pleasure. Although only minutes by car from the vibrant and historic city of York, the hotel is a veritable haven of peace and tranquillity. Set in 8 acres of attractively landscaped gardens, it presents wonderful views of mature woodland, rich farmland and the delightful River Derwent. The relaxing ambience of warmth, lightness and space inside the impressive main entrance is echoed throughout the hotel, which - completed in 1990, and totally re-furbished in 2003 - was specifically designed with the room to breathe in mind. Our accommodation and dining facilities too, offer good taste in abundance. The 30 elegantly furnished, superbly appointed bedrooms all boast en-suite, satellite TV, trouser press, direct-dial telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, and hair dryer. Workspace for conference delegates or business guests is generous and, for your convenience, some rooms have a computer point. Breakfast is served in the dining room bathed in morning sunshine, thanks to a beautiful conservatory, and the Bistro is a diners delight. The cellar - well stocked with a comprehensive selection of fine wines from around the world - perfectly complements a menu renowned throughout the region for freshly prepared quality and deliciously creative cuisine. Imange, for instance, returning from a hectic days sight-seeing or shopping in York, and enjoying a welcome aperitif in our relaxing lounge bar. After dining memorably, a quiet stroll through the gardens, perhaps. Maybe even - as you catch glimpses of the river through the trees - entertaining thoughts of a spot of coarse angling on our private stretch of the derwent. For weddings, too, there can be few better settings and locations. With gardens and horizons creating fabulous photo-opportunities, and our catering and accommodation, expertise and understanding matching the highest of your hopes and expectations, the Gateway to York Hotel and your special day must surely represent a match made in Heaven! Even if you are on business rather than pleasure, you can still relax, in the certain knowledge that our superbly efficient conference staff and magnificent facilities will more than meet your needs.

Arrived expecting to eat at the restaurant only to find it was closed ' due to unforeen circumstances' ie not worth their while opening. The room was O K enough although the bathroom was not clean and in the morning the shower did not work at all which was very annoying as I was attending my daughters graduation. Breakfast was O K too but when I complained about the room was told the Manager was not available and indeed only in 3 days a week !!! Did get £10 reduction but quite frankly very poor hotel quite dirty and smelly although staff were trying their best and were polite but it needs total upgrade and should not have AA stars. Would not recommend in any way at all.

The restaurant was closed for dinners during our stay - apparently the chef had left without notice. Breakfast was good. Room was good but with a few trifling faults e.g. sink plug detached, curtains fell down! but rectified quickly. Rooms and dining area clean and tidy, corridors less so.

standard of room cleanliness could have been better, there were cobwebs in bathroom and dust everywhere. The room as a whole could have done with re-paint. Paint on window frames was chipped and there was mould on bathroom ceiling. Both plugs not attached to chain.
The room was comfortable enough though, and staff friendly.

The hotel was easy to find however ther was only one member of staff on duty which required searching him out behind the bar.
The room was nice and clean the bathroom was fine but we would have liked a better shower. We should have had a room with a king size bed but got a normal double and a single bed not much use if there are only two of you (unless you have an argument!!! ) The double glazing worked a treat we did not notice any traffic noise even though our room was at the front. Breakfast was reasonale and filling and the staff very polite. We would stay again but would only book on line as the 'normal' prices were more than the place is worth. One thing we really apreciated small though it may seem is that there was the option of hot chocolate in the room. A big thing if you don't drink tea or coffee and find most hotels only offer said beverages.
