STOKE PLACE

Really nice quirky hotel - each room is different, none of your standard corporate hotel boxes.
Bar food is great, though some of the choices suffer from slightly small portions. Breakfast is also fantastic - lovely fresh fruit cocktails and pastries, great quality cooked food (done to order).
Feels luxurious, the rooms have nicely fitted out bathrooms (some only have baths though), large TVs, wonderful beds and duvets. Only hotel I've stayed in which has fresh coffee/cafeteria in the room.

A classic exterior with beautiful grounds clashes with the attempted ultra chic and modern interior. The impression given is one of a face-lift gone wrong - abandoned part way through due to lack of cash. Even in the suites, the bathroom mirrors were devoid of lighting and the full-length mirrors positioned such that you were unable to see below the knee...
The style, age and history of the house has clearly had no influence on the interior design. The decor would be more appropriate in an inner city loft. The nod in the direction of eco-friendliness displayed on the self-bottled sparkling water (thereby recycling the glass bottles) was totally wiped-out by having the heating on full on a mild September day and leaving all the doors open. The public areas were stifling. When we tried to open our bedroom windows we found they were painted shut and were told to put on the air-conditioning.
That said, the staff couldn't have tried harder to make up - always smilingly attentive.
