If it had not have been for the very warm welcome from the Duty Manager as I arrived, who was extremely polite and helpful and seemed to be everywhere working very hard, and I wish I had taken her name, I would have walked out of the hotel as soon as I saw my room (35). The hotel is shabby to say the least with the exception of the main bar which was actually OK. The shower in my room was scalding hot or scalding hot and therefore unusable and the main light did not work, the bed was very uncomfortable and the ensuite facilities were poor with the wash basin not in the ensuite room. I would not recommend this hotel at £89, nor anything greater than a 1*. The food was very average. I think this hotel is very lucky to have such pleasant front of house people working for it, because I believe them to be the only redeeming feature of the hotel. |

Superb building, suffering from lack of owners attention. Felt at times like being on the Marie Celeste. Reception not fully manned and there was no bell on reception to call if emergency arose. No details of meal times or facilities in room. No barperson on duty. Most things on breakfast menu unavailable - no porrige, grapefruit, haddock etc. |

Great experience, all of the staff were welcoming and friendly. Gorgeous reception rooms and guest areas - faded elegance and charm in abundance. The double room we had was simple and clean - warm too (good central heating). We had a clean and roomy en suite bathroom with power shower - worked well and plenty of hot water too. The evening meal we had in the splendid dining room was excellent - good service, great value and well presented, delicious too. Breakfast was good too, not the biggest cooked breakfast but vary tasty (great smoked bacon). All in all we had a lovely one-day-stay at this gem of a country house hotel - we really couldn't have been more pleased to be honest. We were particularly taken with how well trained the staff were... all were courteous and very welcoming - they all deserve a raise! Close to the motorway (M74) but no road noise, very handy as a stop-over en route south of the border. We will definitely be recommending this hotel to our friends. |
