Whatley Manor

Twatley, Malmesbury

It is very difficult to define exactly what it is that makes Whatley Manor so special. In many ways, you have to experience it for yourself to understand what it is that sets it apart from other hotels. For yes, Whatley Manor is a hotel, but a hotel which is wonderfully warm as well as stylish, intimate as well as beautiful - an oasis of calm in an increasingly frantic world.Welcome to a new way to relax, welcome to Whatley Manor. Latest awards: four AA Red Stars, three AA Rosettes, Conde Nast Johansens best spa in UK, Chef of the year by Gullivanter's Guide, only UK entry for 2005 in Relais & Chateaux, two restaurants: Le Mazot, a Swiss interior Brasserie and one Michelin star restaurant The Dining Room (closed Mondays and Tuesdays).

Stayed a few times now and would say it's worth a go just to experience the quirkiness. Rooms biggish with heavy tapestries and very dim lights, albeit quiet and comfortable (Room 9 very good) Staff very obliging

We recently stayed for 3 nights and have mixed feelings about the stay, it just misses the mark in with little things, which is a shame. So to summarise
Location - excellent, Tetbury worth a visit.
Resturant - The tasting menu in the main dining room was excellent. Dinner in the Le Mazot was spoilt by the fact that a bottle of wine ordered had to be requested 3 times and eventually arrived half way through the main course. Breakfasts - excellent.
Spa - Good if you can get a treatement. We managed 1 massage each, could not book anything else as they only had 5 staff available. This was very disappointing, they had the room capacity but no staff, we even said we would take the VIP suite but still no staff !
Room - Good, but tiny things made it miss excellent- lights not working and missing towels, no where to dry hair in front of a mirror, I had to do this in the hall. A faint bad smell came from the shower - there is is also a bed smell in the main bar, when questioned they said it was the drains.
Cancellation policy - we wanted to reduce our visit to two nights, but they would not shift on the cancellation fee, which is the full cost of the room - said they would aim to resell the room, but we got the very distinct impression that they made no effort to do this, so we ended up staying.
All in all, we had a 'nice' 3 night break but for the price and type of hotel it should of been excellent. I would recommend other hotels in the same league as this before recommending this one.

Everything about this hotel was great. The only let down was the food served in the Spa. £9.50 for a panini that was served on a plate without any dressing or salad is a little OTT, despite the hotel holding a Michelin Star. The poor presentation did not warrant the price.
At stay at this hotel is very relaxing. Would definitely recommend.
