Pelham House

St. Andrews Lane, Lewes

Pelham House is a 16th Century hotel decorated in contemporary style, situated in the historic town of Lewes nestled in the heart of Sussex.
Most bedrooms overlook our pretty south facing garden, framed by views towards the South Downs. We aim to provide our guests with perfect facilities to enjoy their stay.
All rooms are fitted with contemporary handmade oak furniture, remote controlled TVs, phones and high speed data points and have en-suite baths or luxury showers, a range of natural toiletries and comfortable beds with crisp white linen.
10 minutes from Brighton and just over 1hr from London the House can accommodate up to 58 guests in a mixture of twin and double rooms all beautifully decorated and some benefiting from marvellous views over the South Downs.
The Hotel is only a 2 minute walk from Lewes Train Station making it convenient for Eastbourne, Brighton, Chichister, Goodwood, Brighton and Plumpton Racecourses.
The Garden is a town centre oasis with its lawn and traditional English flowers.
Inside the house, one can marvel at the original Oak panel carvings of the Panelled room or at the fantastic ceiling mural commissied to Julian Bell by the owners of the House.
Pelham house offers 31 bedrooms, accommodating up to 58 guests. Our rooms have been individually designed to blend the best of modern fittings and comfort whilst preserving many original historic features of the building.
Quirky Lewes is full of Antique and local produce and shops and has played an important role in English history. The Saxon town was granted by William the Conqueror to William de Warenne, on return from Normandy in 1067; in 1264 it was the scenery for the Battle of Lewes; Tom Paine, writer of 'The Rights of Man' who later played a key part in the French revolution and went on to co-write the American Declaration of Independence was a also Lewes son.

Pelham House was fairly expensive for the services provided, but it was pleasant and different.
The room was clean (except for lots of dust above the doorframe) and the bathroom was nice.
There was no DVD player in the room (falsely advertised), and the TV was too small to see clearly from across the large bedroom. The bed was perfetct.
The breakfast was tasty, although I was disppointed by the lack of a baked bean alternative the large and somewhat unsatisfying grilled mushroom!

This is a lovely place to stay - a lovely old house with eccentric charm and a feeling of well established but welcoming grandeur. Our room was comfortable but not OTT, but then we did have a standard double. It had a lovely view of the gardens and the downs beyond. The hotel has a nice bar and throughout there are various arts of work from paintings to sculptures. The dinning room is gorgeous - old oak elaborate pannelling. The food was really good and not too extuationately priced. A great place to stay right in the centre of lewes but tucked away from the main roads. The service was good even though we did wait a while at times for food to arrive.

Nice hotel but not very cosy - was expecting country house hotel style and public areas were eclectically modern and clinical. Food was ok but not as good as I was expecting and frankly poor value (almost amusingly small portion of sauteed baby veg side order for £4 - worked out at almost a pound per baby leek!). Very nice staff and guests are allowed to use the hotel computer to go online for free (or free Wifi in rooms). National calls from telephone in room are also free which was good. I would stay here again for business but only if I couldnt find a better value, slightly more comfortable alternative with a more appealing menu.
