The Hand at Llanarmon

Llanarmon, LLANGOLLEN

Set in the glorious countryside of the upper Ceiriog Valley, The Hand at Llanarmon, with its oak beams and (in winter) blazing log fires, epitomizes the best in the traditional British country inn. The bar embraces local people and travellers alike, and the unique candle-lit dining room offers an excellent menu in relaxed, informal surroundings. In 2007 the commitment of our Head Chef, Grant Mulholland, and his team has been recognised by the awards not only of a prestigious AA rosette for the quality of their food, but also of an AA 'egg-cup' for outstanding breakfasts. Whilst we're committed to sourcing locally, we put the quality of the produce first. All our rooms are en-suite and equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities (including ground coffee and cafetieres), as well as televisions. The valley, and the Berwyn mountains behind us, are fabulous walking and horse-riding country: you can walk for miles in any direction straight from the front door, and you probably won't bump into another soul. Almost any other country pursuit can be arranged nearby.

We understood that the room would be a small standard but as this was the location we wanted and because we could dine there this was the preferred option. On arrival we were given a Superior Double room which was excellent. The temperature had reached 0 c as we reached The Hand. The fire in the lovely old grate in reception was very welcoming - we enjoyed our first drink sat beside it. Our evening meal was superb. I had local trout and my husband enjoyed a Welsh steak. Breakfast was equally good especially the porridge with a splash of whisky. The staff were very effcient and friendly - an altogether good get -away for us.

Great hotel and we really enjoyed staying there. The hotel across the road is excellent and you can do a pub crawl of the whole village with only a 20 metre walk.
The only problem I had was the landlord's attitude when his wife was about to pour the remaining couple of millilitres of scotch in the bottle into my glass. He stopped her which I though rather mean when I had spent a vast sum of money on room, food and drink. I probably will not stay again as a result (silly little things make a big impression).

The hotel is quite a way off the beaten track but set in beautiful rural surroundings and well worth the trip. The staff and locals alike were very friendly and welcoming. The bar was excellent and food in the restaurant was very good but not exceptional. Excellent breakfast but £12.50 pp is a bit steep if you have to pay for it separately. The Hand is very good value for money at Laterooms prices of £50 B&B for 2 people sharing but somewhat overpriced at £100 for the same deal if booked directly.
