hotel looked bit grim roadside - but actually looked out onto lovely gardens from the dining area. lovely young guy on reception. lovely fire in reception area which just added to the lovely welcome. decor quite old and tired especially in the dining room and bedroom. bathroom in need of cleaning around the bath - bit mouldy and drains smell in the bathroom. no hot water and noise from taps as well as staff from outside window until late.
small car park. meals expensive. would like to see if they had better rooms to offer - should have asked really but never liked to complain once there in case it caused bad feeling once there. long way to go from home - but would like to try a better room if there was a next time - at a reduced price to make up for the last time?

We stayed on a dinner, B&B rate which was really good value if you're looking for a mini-break. The exec room was a very good size with a sitting/lounge area with French doors and a balcony over looking the well presented gardens. Very peaceful, had a very good rest. Bathroom was large with both a bath and separate shower cubicle. Restaurant was elegantly presented with a good choice of food from the A La Carte menu. We had the 3 course dinner which had a good choice and very large portions. Good wine selection with good varying prices... a bottle for every budget. Bar was quite pricey at £13.70 for two doubles, but you're on a break, treat yourself! Good choices for breakfast. Friendly and attentive staff. Overall; well worth it if you get a special DBB rate. Will definitely be staying again!

A friendly reception on arrival, nothing appeared to much trouble for the staff, right down to lighting the log fire.!!
Room was great, despite the comments made about room 6, a great place to spend a night or two, the gardens are fab for a stroll around, and the location is great for Ennerdale, Wasdale etc for getting out walking.
A good experience, the staff making the stay a pleasure.
