The Swan Hotel

High Street, Alton

An ideal base for Business and Leisure Guests. Situated in the Heart of Alton, you do not need a Taxi or Bus to access the Towns local facilities. Our guests include many people of sense and sensibility - that is to say, devotees of Jane Austen, who make their pilgrimage to her cottage in the Chawton area of Alton during their stay with us. The cottage now is a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to Jane's life and work. Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice were written here. But you don't have to be a fan of Jane Austen to enjoy the pretty village of Chawton or the attractions of the Swan Hotel. Situated in the main high street of this pretty market town the Swan Hotel is a beautifully kept & presented Old English Hotel.Dating back to pre 1377, when first mentioned in Charter, the hotel has accommodated many famous guests, including, Queen Elizabeth the First, The Earl of Essex, Lord Nelson, Sir Francis Drake, Judge Jeffries (The hanging Judge), Field Marshall Montgomery, Lord Baden Powell to name but a few.The rooms have recently been refurbished.Only 8 Miles from Petersfield, 11 from Basingstoke and 4 miles from Selbourne.

The Hotel was in need of some basic maintenace. The room had a number of problem. the toilet seat was broken the toilet roll holder fell off the wall and the extractor fan sounded lawn mower.
The floor of the room was at a strange angle which rolled you out of bed as you slept.
The TV had very poor reception.
The Windows would not close properly.

What a nice surprise. A traditional hotel, the sort where you still need a proper key for the door. The rooms were clean with good quality beds and fluffy white towels...the sign of a good hotel. Staff were attentive and the breakfast was properly cooked. Exceeded my expectations for a market town hotel.
