The room was filthy, there were cobwebs on the windows which had been there for a long time.the carpets were dirty and in desperate need of a good clean, the mats that the drinking glasses were on in the bathroom we through in the bin. the break fast was not up to scratch either.

We were nicely suprised by this hotel after reading some of the reviews. It has the feeling of a grand old castle, which is a little shabby around the edges but this adds to the charm. For the price we paid for the room we could not believe how good everything was. The food was lovely, though don't expect quick service, we were seated 1hr after our booked time, this did not really matter to us as we were sat in the atmospheric old lounge, but if your hungry get there early!

We paid around half of the 'listed' price of the room and for that price we were happy. The location is great and the building is set in beautiful surroundings. Our room was big enough with everything we needed but we were underneath the staff accommodation. The staff were not noisy, just heavy footed which wasn't great when they finished shifts in the middle of the night and spent half an hour walking backwards and forwards above us! (Room 1.9)
Evening meals were very good and the breakfast was ok, if a little oily.
If I was paying the full price, I would have been complaining! A lot more care is needed with the cleaning (certainly in our room) - cobwebs and spiders throughout bedroom and bathroom and thick dust around room edges and behind tables and beds etc. It is not what I would expect for what I think is sold as quite up market accommodation.

The hotel is beautiful and is set right on the River Nith - meaning there are some great walks along the banks of the river.
Our room was clean and large enough, although the bathroom could be doing with some upgrading - this didn't take away from the over all impression of the hotel though.
We intend to return to the hotel very soon and have already recommended this hotel to family.
The staff were all very friendly and were happy to help you out if required.
