Barcelo Cardiff Angel Hotel

Castle Street, Cardiff

Nestling between Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium, the Angel Hotel is perfectly placed for exploring this vibrant city. Steeped in history, the hotel dates back to 1883 and is the most famous in Cardiff. Some of the world's greatest stars have walked down the hotel's magnificent staircase, including Marlene Dietrich, The Beatles and Gregory Peck. Recent investment has restored the building to its former Victorian splendour and it now benefits from air-conditioning in all bedrooms and secure car parking subject to availability.

The hotel was very easy to get to, and the reception we receieved was excellent.
The vast majority of the staff we encountered were friendly, particularly the Polish and French gentlemen.
However the linen on the bed had seen better days, some of the decor was past it's best and the bathroom could do with some grouting! Was also suprised to find mistakes on my final bill which were pretty obvious.
All in all a more positive than negative experience, but not a 4* hotel as advertised.

From the check in with Jeremy until the check out again two nights later, the staff were the most friendly and helpful I have met in a long time. The restaurant food was superb and served with warmth and friendlisness. What was so apealling was that they made everyone feel special. The hotel reception and public rooms are spotless and very ornate and glamarous. It is an old hotel, so the floors in the corridors to the rooms creaked a little, but it never bothered us. The rooms were perfectly good, but would benefit by a little spruce up. WE asked for a twin bedded room but got a double but nevertheless, everything else made up for it.

Customer service was extremely poor. The quality of the room was poor. Do not have breakfast in the hotel. It is £12.50 and is not especially good. My recommendation would be to go 50 metres down the road to one of the many pubs that does breakfast for £3. The hall way and staircase is very impressive and has been done out very well. However this can not be said for the rest of the hotel. The location is however very good if you need to be in the city centre. In short poor customer service, poor room quality, misleading pictures, very overpriced for what it is.

Although the room itself was newly decorated and very comfortable, it was let down by other areas of the hotel, in particular the lifts, which were old and slow. One of them broke down, and at one stage one of them was commandeered by the porter for luggage. One has to pay extra for breakfast, yet I had quite a wait to be seated, and found there was little left in the way of cooked food. Unfortunately, the scrambled eggs were left over, and having tasted them, I could see why.
