I liked this hotel very much. Our room was very comfortable and the hotel itself is stunning. The breakfast was top notch with a great selection. I didn't have time to use the spa or pool so can't comment on that. Only slight complaint was that the air-con/heating in our room was quite noisy. I would definitely stay here again though and indeed am hoping to return next year.

Basically, it's a medieval hall, extensively rebuilt in the late Victorian gothic style with a large modern extension. My room in the modern extension was very well decorated, but unusually for a 4* hotel, had no mini-bar and only just enough hangers for one person. It was also freezing cold and the heating kept cutting out. Upon investigation I deduced that this was caused by the heating sensor being located in the return air duct rather than the wall controller, so the warm air was stratifying and recirculating without warming the room - a very fundamental design flaw! I solved the problem by turning the thermostat up to 27c and the fan speed to max, but in this mode it is much to noisy to sleep so you have to turn the heating off! With the curtains closed this didn't matter in November but I would not like to repeat the experiment in January!
TOP TIP:
If your hotel room has the occupancy card system and you want to keep the heating on and power to your laptop when you go down to dinner, insert a hotel or store loyalty card in the holder instead of the hotel entry card, this keeps the power and heating on whilst you're out!
My other grumble was the internet - no Wi-Fi, and the Ethernet cuts out every two hours so you have to log back in - they said that they would charge £5 for each two hour session which seemed expensive - but I didn't get charged anything!
The restaurant features a revolving bar - a bit fast for serious drinkers - but £3.20 a pint seemed reasonable. On the other hand the restaurant itself is overpriced:
Prawn salad £16.50
Glass of wine £9.10
Cup of tea £2.20
However, breakfast was free with both hot & cold buffet.
If stuck in Crewe I'd stay again for £84 including breakfast, but I certainly wouldn't pay rack rate!
