Piersland House Hotel

Craigend Road, Troon

Piersland Lodge was built in 1899 by William Leiper, as the home for Sir Alexander Walker, grandson of Johnnie Walker, founder of the Scotch Whisky firm Johnnie Walker. Sir Alexander was Managing Director of Johnnie Walker whisky and created Johnnie Walker Red and Black label. The property, which is located opposite the Royal Troon Golf Course, world renowned location of the British Open Golf Championship, remained a family home until 1956 and is now a hotel retaining the original country house character. Piersland House is a Grade A building. All original features remain: including wood carvings, stone fireplaces, wood paneling and a Jacobean embroidery frieze worked by the Tapestiere to King George V. Keeping to the Whisky theme, each bedroom is based on a malt Whisky distillery or family. All bedrooms have been fully updated while ensuring their original charm remains. Each room has full facilities and a room service menu is available. The Piersland House offers fine cuisine and value for money, whether dining in the restaurant or the bars. Two AA Rosettes are testimony to the Chef's culinary expertise."Two Rosettes denotes cooking that displays a high degree of competence on the part of the chef. Abolishing the separate dining room was a mistake - it's not pleasant to have a meal in noisy bar surroundings. Bathroom was unheated and cold (in June!). Washbasin tap unit was not fastened in.

Smallest bathroom I have ever seen in my life, I had to dry off in the bedroom after taking a shower as there was no room to move in the bathroom.

Food in the restaurant was very good and good value with lots of choice. I booked a superior room but found the bed to be very lumpy and uncomfortable for a 4 star hotel, also TV was pretty old and the sound very distorted, remote control did not work.
I have stayed at this hotel before in the same room but this time found it was not up to the same standard.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The receptionist was very helpful and friendly but our room and the bed linen stank of stale cigarettes and I had to ask for a move which was done without fuss - but why put us in this room in the first place when I had specifically asked for a non-smoking room? Our second room was smell-free but next door to the heating boilers and was so noisy that it would have been unbearable with the windows open.
For our meal I asked for a bread roll and was told that these were only available for weddings! Nothing else was offered and I had to suggest myself that maybe there might be some bread and butter....? This was eventually produced.
The hotel building itself was very attractive - come on manager and tighten up on your details because this could be a really pleasant plce to stay.
