Room carpet not properly vacuumed. Very bad smell of fish in main reception area. Bar food menu very restricted, restaurant menu a bit pricey. Very strange breakfast buffet arrangement. Had to notify Reception if we wanted breakfast in restaurant or buffet in another room. Elected for the latter, but upon arrival were initially told we had to go to the Restaurant! Explained we had elected to have the buffet, and allowed to stay. Surprisingly no one was allowed to serve themselves from the cooked breakfast part of the buffet, but an attendant served. Were they afraid we'd eat them out of house and home? No meanness on the first morning. On the second morning my wife wanted just grilled tomatoes. Although she was foregoing bacon, eggs, beans, black pudding, etc, she was only allowed 2 halves of grilled tomatoes, ie 1 tomato, no more. The reputation of Scottish meanness was thus greatly enhanced. Come on Winnock, letting customers serve themselves with what they want, and allowing someone to have 4 or 5 tomatoes will not bankrupt you.

Bar service was terrible, left standing at the bar waiting to order whilst 3 staff members has a conference at the other end of the bar, bar food was medoicre but edible. Room was OK but not what i expected for the money paid with dusty areas & a wall that had just been polyfilled. Balcony railings had green mould on them, which easily transferred to my dressing down. Breakfast was average, no Scottish breakfast though. definately not value for money!!

Very disappointed to learn on arrival that the option of booking a smoking room which was offered on laterooms booking page was now withdrawn as the manager had decided to make his 12 smoking rooms all non smoking from the beginning of June in a completely cavalier fashion. It was mainly on the basis of the availability of smoking bedrooms that we booked this short break having been there in March, and it detracted greatly from our enjoyment . While we are not against thoise who do not wish to smoke it is completely undemocratic to disallow the facility to those who do wish to smoke and particularly when it is NOT against the law to do so in bedrroms in that up until a few weeks ago the hotel had dessignated smoking rooms. A very officious receptionist assured us that they had notified all their booking agents about their total ban - obviously not LATEROOMS as we were given the option on booking.
The windows in the room are such that you would need a degree in engineering to operate them and we ended up with our window being stuck OPEN all night in a ground floor room. Didnt sleep a wink most of the night then when finally dropped off around 7.00 am was awakened by a bakers van screeching to a halt right outside our room with radio blaring followed by the noise of unloading his wares. The toilet roll holder was loose and so the whole roll fell to the floor every time you tried to use the tissue. In a double room only ONE shampoo and shower gel issued -presumably you have to fight with your partner as to who gets to use it. Fortunately we only paid £59 and so put up in silence, but I certainly would not pay the normal rate of £118.
Breakfast was average but heaven help you if you wanted the Kippers as they were charging a £3.00 SUPPLEMENT for these on top of the normal cost of breakfast. We priced two kippers in Asda the other day and they cost 63P. - Quite disgraceful I would say to pay an additional £3.00.
I do not think we will ever return!!!!!!
