Worsley Arms Hotel

High Street,Hovingham, Helmsley (Hovingham, Nr York)

Set in beautiful Ryedale countryside between the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales. Close by is Castle Howard, Pickering, Malton & Helmsley and York is just 20 minutes away. Built in 1841 as a Georgian Spa Hotel the Worsley Arms offers an exquisite, timeless country house setting with open log fires and stylish furnishings. The restful and informal environment is perfect for a relaxing break in the North Yorkshire Countryside. The hotel is a perfect base for visitors to truly discover the delights of Rydale.
The bedrooms, all of which have private bathrooms, are individually furnished and offer direct telephone, television and room service. Superior as well as standard bedrooms are available both in the main house and the cottages. For that special occasion there is an antique four poster suite. The cottages are directly across the road from the hotel on the green and rooms are slightly larger than those in the main house.
Food is undoubtedly a highlight at The Worsley Arms. Chef, with a wealth of local produce on the door-step, aims to combine the best of traditional and modern cooking with presentation that reflects an individual style. The food can be enjoyed in the Restaurant where 3 courses of Award winning food costs around £27.50 per person or dine in the more informal Cricketers Bistro.
Situated in the picturesque village of Hovingham, the hotel is set between York (20 minutes) and The North York Moors in idyllic countryside. Set opposite Hovingham Hall and just a short drive from Castle Howard, the area is tranquil but full of so many things to see and do - you will be spoilt for choice and want to come back soon.

We stayed 1 Friday night in October. We found the staff to be very friendly, polite and efficient. The evening meal was nice, and plentiful, but a bit pricey and nothing special (as vegetarians we can't speak for the quality of meat dishes etc), though the chef was very accommodating and offered a choice of dishes not on the menu. Service was excellent. The breakfast was again nothing special but good enough. We stayed in a cottage room which was a reasonable size with a large bathroom, but was in desperate need of a makeover. It was probably last decorated 20 years ago! The hotel itself is beautiful, with cosy snugs and the bar area had a roaring log fire which created a nice ambience. The Cricketers bistro, where we ate has a nice ambience too. A nice place to stay for a short break.

Maybe we chose the wrong time. The cleanliness of the room was suspect - the bin in the bathroom was full of someone else's (not very pleasant) rubbish. There was a pair of dirty underwear stuffed at the back of the wardrobe and the curtains - those heavy velvet types - were covered high up in a thick layer of accumulated dust. The food was OK, not stunning, the bar service was poor. The real ale pump needed repair, and there was too little room.
The second night we couldn't get to sleep until after 2 pm. as there was a wedding do in the marquee about 20 yards from our room. We were not informed of this at the time of our booking nor given the option to relocate rooms.when we got there. The room itself was average. We were told we had been put in this room because the agricultural vehicles in the main street were loud at this time of year, so we were at the back with "a wonderful view of the Yorkshire countryside". This wasn't true. Our room looked out onto the hotel car park and a shippon.
All in all disappointing considering the cost. They need to up their game considerably otherwise they will lose out to nearby better and more competitive hotels

The Hotel staff were unanimously friendly and helpful. The food was good and well-cooked. However, the two rooms used by my group were tired in terms of decor and are in need of modernisation. We paid a reduced rate via Laterooms which was good value - the full rate would have been far too expensive for the quality of the rooms.

Room 21 was in a series of cottages opposite the hotel. It had the lergest king size bed I have seen (at least 6 foot wide)
It was comfortable and the staff were polite and helpful. I Ieft a coat behind by accident and they sent it on to me with a request to send a cheque for the postage.
I would reccomend this hotel to anyone
