When booking 'LateRooms.com' we expected to be accommodated on the same terms as anyone else, but were given a room above the kitchen with the noise of the extractor-fan ever present. After making a complaint, our room was up-graded, without extra charge, but the damage was already done. The room we were initialy allocated was, in our opinion, not worth £170 a night - which was the way in which the room was advertised on 'LareRooms.com'. The second room was luxurious and quiet - but so dark that it was impossible to tell what time of day it was.
The attitude of the staff at the hotel was faultless; the breakfast wonderful; and the location sublime - but such is the competition in the Ambleside area - this wasn't enough to make us want book the Langdale Hotel again. Why? Well, extra charges for a start. I've never come across a surcharge for kippers before - or smoked haddock - either they're on the breakfast menu or they are not. Also, we felt that the dinner menu was expensive. My husband and I had come to the Lake District to walk - we wanted maps - big ones, on the wall; and small ones, on the desk at reception - but there weren't any. We were told that maps were available at the 'Country Club' - but there were none evident.
It didn't quite gel together somehow. We found the fascilities fragmented: perhaps what we were looking for was there - but we couldn't find it - the Langdale wasn't quite what we had hoped for. First impressions are everything to hotel guests - and why would a hotel risk its reputation by using a room above the main kitchen as a hotel bedroom? We paid £45 each for bed and breakfast and when one considers other hotels, guest houses, or dare I say it, YHA prices, that just about represents good value for money - but nothing special. I might expect to sleep above the kitchen at the YHA - or even at a B&B - but not at a hotel where the usual charge is £170 per room per night. For such an establishment. It's a mistake to put guests in the room above the kitchen, they won't come back, and, they will tell their friends, who might also be looking for a little late minute luxury.

Lovely setting, do look at the beck! Excellent quality room, though could do with a little more hanging / storage space. Good wireless internet access. Sadly pool out of action on arrival but OK by following day and is part of a great facility. Buffet breakfast hotter & better than most. All staff very helpful. Great value lamb shoulder meal at Wainwrights though couldn't eat it all.
