The Unicorn Hotel

Sheep Street,Stow On The Wold, Stow-on-the-Wold

The Unicorn Hotel is a 17th century hotel with warm honey stone walls and window boxes bursting with colour. The hotel is recommended by Johansens and is decorated in a stylish manner. All 20 bedrooms have their own character and individual style. Jacobean furniture nestles against modern fabrics and ancient beams lie against colour washed walls. Modern bathrooms lead off antique furnished bedrooms and there are both half tester and four poster rooms.Soak up history at the Unicorn in the pretty sitting room with afternoon tea by the inglenook fireplace. Step over the flagstone hearth into the friendly atmosphere of the bar with its roaring log fire and wooden settles which is as popular with the locals as it has always been. Sink into a comfy chair next to the fire and relax with a drink and a light meal. Alternatively, enjoy fabulous English cooking with a modern twist in the elegance of recently refurbished dining room. There are many beautiful golf courses, walks and bike rides for you to enjoy in the rolling Cotswold countryside and some wonderful Gardens and Historic Houses to visit. The arts of Cheltenham and Stratford are also in easy reach. All rooms have private bathroom en suite, remote control colour television, radio, hair dryer, tea & coffee making facilities and direct dial telephone.

We stayed as a family using two rooms for just one night. The Unicorn is in an excellent location in Stow and easy to find. It looks great and the web pictures do it justice - a hotel with real character. Of the two rooms we used, one was in better decorative order than the other. Both were acceptable, one was good. The facilities in the rooms were fine. The hotel reception area has a very nice family area/lounge to one side - nice and light with games and some kids toys though we didn't use it.
We look around Stow for somewhere to eat and in the end we couldn't find anywhere with a better menu and nicer-looking restaurant and so we ate in the Unicorn. We weren't disappointed. Dinner was excellent and prices were consistent with other hotels in the area. Breakfast was also very good. The bar had a nice atmosphere and a choice of real ales. All very good.
Staff were helpful and friendly and all in all, it was a good experience. The Unicorn is a good example of a small hotel that has retained its charm and offers something more than the big chains - for a bit more money. We think that extra is worth it.
The only problem we found was that the location by the side of a main road meant that it was a bit noisy with the windows open on a Sunday morning.
