Hatton Court

Tucked away behind a bank of mature trees, Hatton Court sits on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment between the Cathedral City of Gloucester and the glorious village of Painswick. Hatton Court is a reassuring size not large and impersonal, nor too small. As a former splendid Cotswold home, the feeling is one of being eminently comfortable as opposed to grand. Nothing is hurried. The reception is very much a lounge with armchairs, magazines and an open fireplace for those chillier days. Next door the bar is more a place to relax, take tea, read and talk than to rush. The care taken to prepare the food, combined with a smiling service is complimented by the thought that has gone into creating the restaurant. Warm soft furnishings balance the picture windows that allow you to take in the broad horizons beneath the escarpment to the Malvern Hills and the Severn Estuary. The peace and the surrounding Cotswold countryside and comfortable bedrooms, some with whirlpool baths, make for a goodnight's sleep. Please note Hatton Court is a non-smoking hotel. Please contact the hotel prior to arrival for dinner reservations as tables cannot always be guaranteed.<BR

M5 from the North Leave the M5 at junction 11a and follow A46 signs for Painswick. In the centre of Painswick turn right onto the B4073 to Gloucester, Hatton Court is 3 miles on the left. M5 from the South Leave at junction 12 and head towards Gloucester on A38. After 2 miles turn right onto Cole Avenue (A38) at traffic lights. Turn right at third roundabout onto B4073 towards Painswick. After 2 miles, climbing a steep hill, Hatton Court is on the right. From M4 Exit at junction 15, taking A419, then A417, towards Gloucester. Sharp left at Air Balloon pub roundabout. At base of hill take junction left signposted A46 to Painswick. In the centre of Painswick turn right onto the B4073 to Gloucester, Hatton Court is 3 miles on the left

hotel always good value and pleasant but now much improved food. Always a pleasure staying here. Particularly like the offer of DVD rental at reception- so much nicer than the normal offer of only blockbuster or porn!

The hotel looks impressive, but I would have been disappointed with the room had I paid full price, as it was on the small side with a very dated/faded ensuite bathroom. Service in the bar and restaurant was generally good. The food was quite good, but I was disappointed by a very salty cooked breakfast in the morning. Because I booked at a considerable discount and very last minute I thought it offered value for money, but I wouldn't plna a romantic weekend away here.

Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. easy to find, staff friendly and helpful. had to wait a short while for service in the bar, but not a problem, bar food good. Room big with large bed, but used to be a smoking room, so could have done the the curtains being cleaned. Only real gripe would be the fitness suite, which had a rowing machine with a non-working display, a stepper and a rather antiquated weight machine, a sauna which wouldn't raise above 42c a a non working jaccuzzi bath.

The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Our only complaint was the slow service at the evening meal on two evenings.
