History....
Burford Lodge was built c1814, most probably as an elegant country residence for a local businessman, and was the first property to be built alongside what was then a new road. By 1844, it was The Bird’s Nest public house, and, in 1864 became The Oxford. Soon afterwards, called Oxford House, it was the private residence of Thomas Henry Reynolds who wrote hymns, edited a hymn book, and was financially involved in the Burford brewery and a number of local utilities. He renamed the house High View, and this name remained when, c1930, it was once more converted to trade as The High View Private Hotel.
Later, the liberally-minded Sharpe family, conservationists, musicians and naturists, operated The High View as a bed and breakfast establishment with a caravan site attached. Their business continued until the 1960s, after which it was known for a while as The Winter’s Tale. Since then, the building has been one of the properties in the estate of a national brewery. The business was bought in 2004 by Graham and Paula Cox.

Directions to Burford Lodge Hotel & Restaurant

Burford Lodge is situated on the A40 between Cheltenham and Oxford, on the south side of the road, about 300 yards east of the intersection between the A40 and the A361 that runs through the centre of Burford. The hotel has its own car park, which can accommodate up to forty vehicles. We are situated on two major through roads: one crosses the south Cotswolds, and the other links central Wiltshire with Northamptonshire. Burford Lodge is only 9 miles from the A429 that cuts through the centre of the Cotswolds. This means that we can easily be reached by organisations in the area who want to arrange away-days for their executives, and the hotel is ideally situated for private visitors who want to explore the region.

An excellent overnight stay. A very warm welcome, a comfortable room with some lovely extra touches, and a super breakfast.

This was a very pleasant hotel to stay in with a warm and friendly ambience. Close to RAF Brize Norton, it was a perfect stopover for me after landing in from Afghanistan. The food was excellent and the bed was not at all uncomfortable as a previous reviewer had complained. I would stay again. There was no problem moving the date by one day at short notice due to my flight date changing

The quality of the food was excellent. We had dinner on our one night stay which was very good and the breakfast was good also. The rooms at the front of the hotel (we asked in advance to be at the back but two were at the front and the other at the side) were extremely noisy due to the traffic on the main road. As it was August, the result of not being able to open the secondary glazed windows due to the noise was that it was hot and stuffy in the room. The beds were quite uncomfortable. The proprieter and staff were very friendly and helpful and the service in the restaurant was good. If you need a good night's sleep, however, do not stay here.

The hotel was excellent and ALL the staff were extremely positive, polite and efficient. We ate in the hotel on the first night and the experience was so positive that we immediate booked the restaurant for the second night.
