Our privately owned historic country house became a hotel in 1856 and stands on the site of the grand Royal Palaces of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The great cedar tree to the front of the hotel was planted by Charles I to celebrate the birth of his son “Henry of Otelands”.

Room and staff good but the meal in the restaurant was rather overcooked. This may have been due to some large functions taking place that evening.

The manager phoned the day after booking to make us aware that there would be big parties on both nights of our stay and to tell us about the arrangements for dining. The suite was huge and very clean and away from any noise. We received great service at reception and especially when dining. The food was of a very high standard and included in our rate. Things would have been perfect if the newspapers were complementary when ordered.

The hotel staff were very efficient and friendly and could not do enough to help. My wife and I stayed at the hotel with our one year old daughter and found the facilities and service to be of a high standard. Although the hotel is formal in appearance, it has a relaxed atmosphere within and we would certainly stay again.
