The Queens Head

Townfoot ROTHBURY, NORTHUMBERLAND

The Queens Head lies in the centre of the Northumbrian village of Rothbury in the heart of the Coquet Valley. Rothbury is a lovely rural village within 1 mile of the Northumberland National Park and Cragside House and Gardens. There are numerous other castles and National Trust properties within a short drive, as is the lovely wild coastline and Holy Island. With 7 traditionally furnished en-suite bedrooms, a private car park, comfortable bar and a newly refurbished restaurant, the Queens Head is an ideal base to explore this varied County. Walking, fishing, shooting, golf, cycling or just idling, whatever your thing is we can help you enjoy your stay. The Queens Head is noted for its excellent home cooked food. Using the best of local and seasonal produce we have built an enviable reputation so whether you choose something from the daily blackboard or the a la carte menu you will not be disappointed. Breakfast will set you up for the whole day with fresh fruit, yoghurts, cereals and muesli followed by a cooked breakfast, choose from scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, eggs Benedict, Kippers with a potato scone or the full Northumbrian Grill with toast and preserves. We aim to make your stay comfortable and welcoming without being intrusive. There is a private lounge away from the bar if you just want to read the papers in peace and quiet but the locals are friendly and the Beer is excellent (as is the wine..) so we hope you can visit us in Rothbury soon.

We stayed here one night and were disappointed with our room (Rm 3) which was located directly above the bar/pool room and so got no sleep until after 1am. The room itself appeared tired with parts of it also needing dusted and to be relieved of cobwebs. The ensuite bathroom was in need of refurbishment and I would have expected a shower rather than just a basic bath. On a more positive note the staff were very helpful and polite. The bar area was warm and welcoming and had a good selection of fine beers. Also the lunchtime and evening food from the restaurant was good and cooked to order. Inevitably this caused a delay in receiving one's food which at lunchtime was within an acceptable period but not so in the evening when we had to ask for our meal after waiting about 45 minutes. I understand that on this Saturday night the restaurant was very busy but still think this was too long to wait.

Management Response
In light of customer comments regarding the positioning of this room above the bar/pool room area we have taken the decision to remove this room from our inventory indefinitely.

The accomodation , food and staff were very good and friendly bot the 'cossy' room did not have a double bed as we had been led to believe and as I am 6' 5'' tall my wife and I did not have a very comforable nights. We can deal with small rooms. This did rather spoil our stay as we both love the location ,hotel and staff.

Manager Response
I have emailed the customer to advise them the bed is indeed a full double but the style, A sleigh bed with footboard may have made it feel restrictive considering the gentleman is 6' 5" tall. All our beds are full doubles as described on our website.

Very friendly staff and service was good. Room clean, bed extremely comfortable and of good quality. Room needed a little updating. Disappointed in the entrance of the hotel which is in need of refurbishment, however, again as was the rest of the hotel it was clean. Restaurant was excellent and had obviously been decorated to a high standard. Food was extremely good and excellent value for money. Breakfast was good and having a separate dining room for residents for breakfast is a good idea. Comfortable residents lounge. All in all would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a couple of days break in a lovely area, hotel good value for money with friendly and welcoming staff.

Well situated in beautiful village good directions and good parking facilities. Local area good for walking and sightseeing. Staff were VERY helpful friendly and amenable. Nothing was too much trouble. Restaurant lunch and breakfast were exceptionally good and varied in lovely surroundings. We had 2 twin rooms with lovely views 1 with shower, 1 with bathroom and separate shower. No phone and slightly old fashioned but comfortable, light and adequate size. We went into the bar at night and felt at home with locals and other guests, We will certainly be returning in the near future.
