The Downs

Seafront 41-43 Babbacombe Downs Road, TORQUAY

We have just been awarded 4 star Guest Accommodation status by Visit Britain. We have a total of 12 en-suite rooms, 8 with balconies, which enjoy fabulous unobstructed views over Babbacombe Downs stretching along the coastline to Teignmouth and out over Lyme Bay all the way to Portland Bill, other facilities include a fully licenced Lounge Bar & Restaurant. All our rooms differ in size, however we class a 'Superior Room' as one which has either a sea view or is a larger family rear facing room. Babbacombe is a village within the town of Torquay which is a resort in itself often referred to as the 'Jewel in Torquay's crown', famous for its cliff top promenade which enjoys stunning views across Lyme Bay.
Babbacombe Downs is a long stretch of common land, with the highest promenade in the country and sweeping wooded cliffs to the beaches of Oddicombe and Babbacombe below. To make the journey down to the beach at Oddicombe you have the gentle alternative of travelling the 240 feet down on the cliff railway, which has been operating since 1926.
The Downs borders the Babbacombe Downs themselves. We are a family run establishment which welcomes young and old, families, couples and singles alike. Built c. 1850 by Isaac Singer for his sisters, we form part of a terrace. We have a comfortable feel with an emphasis on excellent service now expected by the more discerning traveller.
We have just carried out the first phase of our refurbishment and now have 19" flatscreen freeview TV's in all rooms, with free WiFi access throughout the building. We can accommodate families in our 5 family rooms, with reduced rates for children under 12. We are also dog friendly with a number of our rooms allocated for our four legged friends.
During the summer months the forecourt café provides an excellent area to relax and enjoy a light lunch, traditional cream tea or refreshing beer, with the kiosk serving local ice cream.
We offer Kate's world renowned breakfast which can be served in our spacious restaurant or can be enjoyed on your room balcony.
We are biker friendly. We offer off street parking including CCTV coverage also a secure drying/storage area in room 1 for your bike gear and helmets. So for those of you looking to explore the South West give us a call for full details. We also offer the same secure drying/storage facilities for all our guests (keys available upon request) so whether it be golf equipment, bowls or walking gear we can assist.
For those of you who want to spend the day exploring, or on the beach, packed lunches are available to suit your requirements. Just a stone's throw from Babbacombe is the pretty town centre of St Marychurch - which appears in the Doomsday book. Its pleasant pedestrianised precinct has a fine selection of shops and cafés.
Torquay town centre is 1 1/2 miles away along the Babbacombe Road, passing through Wellswood a popular street lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. Excellent bus links run regularly for those not wishing to walk.

The location of the hotel was very good. We took a short taxi ride from Torquay station.
Just across the road was the cliff railway to Oddicombe beach. The Victorian museum and the model village were a few minutes stroll from the hotel. There are good bus links to Torquay Harbour, however we preferred to walk there.
We booked a superior room which was nicely decorated and very clean. The bed was big and comfy. Our room had a balcony and the view was spectacular. The hospitality tray was well stocked with pleny of tea and coffee, milk and sugar. There was even a bowl of sweets in the room for us.
Breakfast was plentiful, and our full English was freshly cooked to order. There was plenty of cereals, juices, yoghurts and tea and coffee. The hotel had a well stocked bar and the drinks were very reasonably priced - unusual for a hotel bar.
The owners were very friendly and helpful and gave us lots of tips on how to get around.
We would definately stay at this hotel again and are already planning our next trip.

Kate and Ed were fantastic hosts, they could not do enough for us, it was a very late booking and they were happy to see us, they even got special bread for 3 of us as we are unable to eat wheat.
I would have no hesitation in booking with them again and recommending them to others.

Beutiful views over Babacoomb bay, lovely balcony, BUT....having booked a superior room we were a bit surprised to only have 10 inches between the bottom of the bed and the wall, the noy so fit would have trouble getting around the bed and using the balcony, kettle and t.v. etc. extremely nice and helpful couple, and a fabulous breakfast cooked fresh, BUT I heard the gent in the bedroom next door snore all night, the lady of the room being sick in the morning and a conversation extremely audible about a brass band competition, and the noise of her hardrier as loudly as if it was in my own room, so these things did spoil our weekend a bit, and sorry to say we will not go back, a great pity.
