Edinburgh City Hotel

79 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh

Ideally located in the very heart of Edinburgh, a classic privately owned and much loved Edinburgh hotel. Oozing tradition and history, yet cool and contemporary. Occupying a site that was once a great maternity hospital, stylish Edinburgh City Hotel, is situated in the city centre of historic Edinburgh, but pleasantly quietly, amidst the hustle and bustle of this great capital city of Scotland. The property was built in 1879 as a maternity hospital, one of the first hospitals in Britain. Meals can be enjoyed in the bright contemporary restaurant and guests can relax in the cosy but stylish Snug Bar and reception lounge. Staff are very friendly, professional and obliging. Close to all key business districts, the Convention Centre, Princes St, the Castle, rail and bus stations and all major attractions. Combining old and new in a superb Victorian building fully refurbished during 1998 and subsequently, to a very high standard providing a very comfortable, and rather different modern, informal and personal Edinburgh hotel.

The hotel was great and handy for the Castle and the Grassmarket area, but even though we got the hotel cheaper than it should have been it was still quite expensive. There are better value places to stay, but it was nice.

The cleaning staff were obsessed with cleaning my room. We had actually booked for two nights 3 times i was asked did i need the room cleaned even with the do not disturb sign up. and when we left for an hour to get something to eat when we came back the room had been cleaned. I actually found that really really annoying.
Temp of the room was perfect and very clean and comfortable. centrally located and helpful staff.
Only complaint about the room was the ticking of the clock. We couldn't sleep as we both found it excessivly loud. And no parking would be the only reason that i docked marks for value for money

I booked this hotel for 2 reasons. 1) It was listed as 4* on the Laterooms website, and 2) It's located 0.7 miles from the centre.
The hotel is certainly a 3*. This is shown on the Best Western website, as well as on the exterior of the building on the AA and Scottish Tourist Board signs. The hotel is certainly off the beaten track. I would be interested as to where the "centre" of Edinburgh actually is - it may be 0.7 miles away as far as the crow flies, or when going up and down the never ending steps and in and out of the closes. It's at least half a mile to the National Museum of Scotland, and if you stay on the reasonably level ground (the only way if you have luggage) you are looking at the same distance again to Waverley Train Station and Princes Street. Taxis from the train station cost about £4-5.
The hotel is situated in an old building and you can certainly tell. I stayed in Room 308 which was on the main road. I should have taken more notice of another review which commented on the traffic noise. The room was also very musty with the smell being almost overpowering. The decor in the room is starting to show its age.
On the plus side the staff are very friendly and polite.
I guess I'm used to better hotels. I was expecting a 4* and that's not what I got.
