Portbyhan Hotel

The Quay,West Looe, Looe

The Portbyhan hotel is located quayside in the heart of the beautiful cornish fishing town of West Looe. West Looe is still a functioning fishing town and the hotel's location provides guests with great views of 'hustle and bustle' going on everyday in the picturesque harbour. The family run hotel has a reputation for being one of the most popular hotels in Looe purely through recommendations by guests who have stayed in the hotel. All the guest bedrooms in the hotel are en-suite, spacious, clean, comfortable and come with all the modern facilities guests expect such as Colour TV, Telephone and Radio. Many bedrooms have fantastic views of the harbour and/or town. Portbyhan restaurant is situated to provide fantastic views across the quayside and prides itself on great food and great service, offering guests an A'la Carte menu. The Looe fish market is directly opposite the hotel restaurant on the opposite side of the river which means the chefs can prepare dishes such as 'Moules Mariniere' or scallops with the freshest fish caught that morning. The hotel also offers a unique dining experience, the Stone Grill menu. Food served on this stone stays hot throughout the meal meaning your last bite is just as warm as the first and because of the unique nature of the stone, the juices are locked in the food making it extra delicious. With extensive menus, guests are spoilt for choice in the hotel's restaurant. The hotel has a well stocked bar so guests can enjoy a tasty beverage or have a game of pool in the games room. The hotel also puts on live entertainment every night throughout the year making it popular with the locals, a fun night is guaranteed.
PLEASE NOTE: The hotel's lift will be out of operation throughout January and February.

This was our first stay in Looe but, based on the lovely time we had yesterday, we don't expect it will be our last.
Looe itself is a delight - a working fishing port with picture postcard views at every turn and bags and bags of character but none of the tweeness which blights many other South Coast resorts.
Arriving mid-afternoon at the Portbyhan, we were instantly made very welcome and directed to a nearby car-park in order to avoid the astronomical pay-and-display fees charged on the quayside. A number of internet reviewers seem to have got very steamed up regarding parking fees but, assuming one member of your party is fit enough to stroll 400 yards, I really can't see what the problem is.
Our room was fairly unremarkable, standard fare for this type of holiday hotel but it ticked all the necessary boxes in terms of comfort, cosiness and cleanliness, and benefitted from a recently decorated, spotless, modern bathroom. For this kind of money, you really can't ask for more than that, can you?
For us though, The Pontbyhan really came into its own in the evening: apparently some form of musical entertainment is laid on every night, and locals, staff and hotel residents all mixed merrily in the bar. We certainly stayed up much longer than we had planned, enjoying the party atmosphere (and a few too many pints of Doombar) into the early hours.
Incidentally, breakfasts are served until the very civilized hour of 10:00, which was most welcome after the fun of the previous evening.
If we find ourselves in this neck of the woods again we would have no hesitation in coming back to the Pontbyhan.

Very nice hotel.Difficult to find fault. Only slight criticism is that there is no on site parking and public parking is expensive ie £12.00 per night. Otherwise excellent.

We stayed one night as a family of 8 adults and 2 children to attend a family funeral the next morning. We found our rooms to be extremely clean and comfortable and all thoroughly enjoyed the morning breakfast. Our rooms had stunning views over the river and we all would like to return at a less upsetting time. The family room was ideal for my son and daughter-in law with their 2 and 4 year old children. We would highly recommend staying at this hotel.

Parking hard and expensive!. Phone the hotel for advice before arriving to know the cheapest means of arranging where to stick the car (no parking outside hotel double yellow lines).
The room was small but the veiw was amazing.
Parot or Macaw in reception which I liked!, may not be good for people with allergies though.
