Bodkin House Hotel

Petty France, Badminton, South Cotswolds

This 17th century coaching inn which was mentioned in the Novel 'Northanger Abbey' by Jane Austen after she visited the house during her childhood, was built on the site of a 12th century priory (which was destroyed by Henry the VIII) to provide rest to travellers on the Bath-Gloucester route and was extended in the Georgian period to its present state. In more recent times it has undergone an extensive makeover to 'ensure that the property's unique character is complimented by the conveniance and reliability of modern amenities'.On 3 Acres of land with amazing landscaped gardens, guests can enjoy a quiet drink or go al fresco and enjoy meals in the garden or simply take a long stroll around the Water Garden, perfectly situated to the east of the main house to catch the sun, the water garden is also illuminated at night to enhance the colours.
The rooms offer a blend of country traditions with modern en-suite facilities, each with their own unique character and named after famous female writers. Rooms also boast a high standard of comfort and come with such features as Sky TV, Hot Beverage making facilities, broadband and Luxury Bath/Shower facilities.
Guests can dine in the 'Bodkin Restaurant'. A newly refurbished, air conditioned informal dining area.Whether it be from the Specialist menu, the 'Off the wall' menu or the A'la Carte menu which changes weekly, all food is created using the best local and organic ingredients and also caters for vegetarians and children. Diners can make use of the Bodkin restaurant or they can enjoy their meals out on the patio or sun terrace in the summer, either way, an enjoyable experience is guaranteed.
The hotel also offers a fully stocked bar, with a range of guest ales, fine single malts and an extensive wine list which is also available to diners. Guests can also partake of a Bar Meal from the bar menu if they don't wish to go for a full meal in the restaurant.
As with the Restaurant, guests can enjoy their favourite drinks in great company either in the Bar, with its roaring Log Fire which is great in the winter months or they can retire to the sun deck and relax, perfect for those lazy summers.

I used the hotel as a base when I was on a green woodworking course in some nearby woods. Lying on the the main Stroud - Bath road, I found it a pleasant hotel which fulfilled all my needs at a reasonable price. The cooked breakfast was excellent, especially the mushrooms. I didn't use the bar, but evidently the Princess Royal has been known to do so when eventing at Badminton. One minor problem could be for elderly or disabled people. The room had three steps down actually inside the room and there seemed to be a lot of odd steps here and there, but, then, it is an old inn. I would recommend the hotel.

The room definitely hadn't been recently refurbished (avocado bathroom suite and peeling wallpaper at edges) but that apart evrything was fine. The owners were friendly and the food was excellent, but make sure the chef is working as they had no chef on the Sunday night (though they did rustle us up expensive jacket potatoe & ham)

I stayed in a superior room, which had just been refurbished to a very high standard. The room was spacious and elegantly furnished. The bathroom was beautiful and modern, with a huge corner bath with a good quality shower.
Although facing the road outside, the secondary glazing dealt with road noise efficiently. The only thing that would have improved the room was the addition of blackout blinds to the two main windows, which the third window had. The hotel floodlights stay on late into the night, making the room too bright. I did mention this to a member of the staff / the owner.
I only ate in one evening but the food was great and the bar has a lovely atmosphere.
It was a nice change from the usual corporate chains but still eminently practical for the business traveller. The provision of free wireless connection was the key selling point for me.
