The White Swan Inn

Market Place, Pickering (nr Helmsley & York)

A warm Yorkshire welcome to this wonderful 16th century coaching inn. The feel you get through the whole building is exactly what a traditional inn should be, simple but welcoming. There are big comfy sofas to sink into whilst you decide what to eat for dinner. The restaurant is truly traditional and has stone flagged floors and a roaring fire in winter to create the right atmosphere, candle lit at night for extra romance (reservation to be made in advance). The bedrooms are beyond expectations, designed only with your comfort in mind. The bar is a proper bar and serves a choice of real ale from Yorkshire. It is well stocked to include at least six wines by the glass and a fine selection of malt whisky and liqeurs.AA Rosette for food every year since 1997. Hotel of the Year 2000. It is a totally charming hotel with wonderful staff, terrific food and we loved it all... I thought our room was a little on the small side for the money although the bathroom was excellent. And I appreciated that any service charge at all is left entirely to the discretion of the guests - nothing is added automatically. We would make a point of going back if we were anywhere in that part of the country again...it's lovely.

Food was disappontment. Menu sounded innovative but was without real substance - meat was tough and not very tasty. I think the chef tried to be too fancy rather than concentrating on quality simple menus. One breakfast served luke-warm kipper. After 2 nights we elected to have dinner out. For location we would stay again but dine elsewhere.

Would prefer a more child friendly menu in the restaurant. and some simple options for the not so daring adult. the food was beautifully prepared, and tasted good, The club bar is very well done and has inspired me to build one at the top of our garden.......all the staff were very nice and polite. see you again white swan, we will come back.
