Lodge Hotel

we only had breakfast, not very good. We did not have dinner there mainly because of the breakfast quality and the dinning room was part of the bar. The hotel was in need of a severe clean. We found out at 8 o'clock the first morning that the decorators were in the hotel. We were woken but noises from the room above ours. Although there were notices in the hotel, the reception did not mention that work was being done in the room above.
Value for money was bad... I would almost have paid to stay away.

The Lodge Hotel is a lovely hotel - delightfully furnished, and the rooms (or, at least, the room in which I stayed) had good facilities. On arrival, guests are presented with complementary mineral water, wine, chocolate and shortbread. Bedding is changed daily, and the influx of fresh towels during the daytime is quite substantial.
The hotel does not serve its own dinner, but has an arrangement for a discounted price dinner with an hotel over the road that serves really very good food. It does serve breakfast, either cooked or continental (I cannot comment on the quality of the cooked breakfast, since I did not sample it), although, for a Scottish hotel, porridge is noticeably lacking from the breakfast menu. The times during which one can take breakfast are quite limited: as the little guidebook says, "Breakfast is served from 8.00a.m. to 9.00a.m. Early breakfast may be available by prior arrangement. Late breakfast is served between 8.00a.m. and 9.00a.m. the following day".
The staff were pleasant and helpful, although I did find that, when I couldn't get the complementary in-room WiFi to work with my palmtop computer at around eight in the evening, nobody was available either on reception or at the end of a telephone to answer my query.
Overall, a good stay in a charming little guesthouse in the outskirts of Edinburgh (very close to Haymarket station, a shortish walk from the centre of town), and certainly one that I should recommend to others.
