Bateman Arms

Shobdon, Leominster

An AA **** Inn. The Bateman Arms, an 18th Century three storey Inn with rooms, is situated in the village of Shobdon in the unspoilt County of Herefordshire on the English, Welsh Border.
The listed building is of fairly striking and unusual appearance with some of the last of the old cobbled paving outside its front.
Recently renovated the Inn offers a wealth of character. You can sit in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in the bar with its oak beams and large fireplace which hosts log fires in the winter and where we serve a selection of light meals.

The Restaurant offers an à la carte menu specialising in a range of classical and traditional dishes complimented by an excellent selection of fine wines. The majority of our dishes are prepared using top quality local produce with an emphasis on organic dairy products and vegetables together with rare breed meats.
Whether you choose the traditional atmosphere and classical experience of the restaurant or the varied menu served in the lounge bar we aim to offer you an enjoyable and relaxed dining experience.

Bedrooms. Each of our nine rooms is furnished in the traditional style with remote control television, tea and coffee making facilities and hair dryer.

The rooms are separate from the pub which made it a pleasure to be in and seem to be very good conversions from a barn or similar by the side of the car park. Nice and quiet. They were well done and comfortable. Why the low rating for the room? Simple - the shower did not work - despite being virtually brand new. We were told this was because we couldn't work the thermostat properly. Not sure what we did wrong because we had water coming out OK, and we could turn it succesfully to hot but we could not get hot water despite leaving it to run on. There was no-one in the pub when we wanted to tell them about this and we needed to get going to our destination. We were staying at a festival for the weekend so a shower was particularly important to us.
We have just come back from Canada staying in bed and breakfast accommodation for nearly a month. THis was nothing like as good as the Canadian places where we stayed, and much more expensive.
The full english breakfast was fine, sausage, egg, tomato, piece of bacon, black pudding wholemeal toast etc.

Even though we arrived the day after what had evidently been a very busy bank holiday period, my wife and I were made very welcome. The restaurant food was basic but well cooked and presented. £15 each for main course and dessert plus drinks isn't too bad these days. the rooms have evidently been recently rennovated and are spotlessly presented.
