Sunningdale Golf Club was founded on 12th March 1900 when a Founders Committee under the direction of the Clubs Founders, Tom and George Roberts, met in the Caf Monico in London. It was agreed to impose an annual subscription of 5 guineas and admit 200 gentlemen as original members. Willie Park Jnr., son of Open Champion Willie Park was given 3,000 to design and create a course of exemplary character.
The result was Sunningdales Old Course, which opened in 1901. It is pure enchantment that characterises Sunningdale Old. Virtually every hole is played in splendid and beautiful isolation, and in harmony with nature. There is subtlety here, a measure of drama, and a wealth of that one indispensable ingredient - pleasurable excitement. No wonder it may be the most beloved inland course in the British Isles.
All that being said, there are those who like the New Course, which opened in 1922, at least as well. The New is 100 yards longer, and perhaps a bit more rugged than the Old - a bit more masculine, if you will. This is rich and handsome and challenging golf, Harry Colt in top form.
Sunningdale is, without doubt, one of the finest inland golf courses in the United Kingdom, if not Europe. Few courses can match the heathland drama that is available here and few can top the variety of holes, all of which are literally bursting with character.
It was here in 1926 that the legendary Bobby Jones played his infamous round of 66 - out in 33 and, amazingly, back in 33 - to qualify for the Open Championship that year at Royal Lytham & St Annes. In true Jones style, he went on to win the Claret Jug.
